Stephen has about had it with Mulligan, and does not feel he could return to the tower to sleep (there is also the problem of no longer having the key); "home", now referring to the place his immediate family lives, is also not an option -- the family has broken up after May's death, and there is possibly some anger there over Stephen's refusal to pray for her.
