Ulysses parallels the problem of Penelope's suitors in the Odyssey with a series of similarly morally-suspect "usurper"s: the British (usurping Ireland's culture), various men who have dubious relationships with Leopold Bloom's wife Molly (e.g. Hugh Boylan) and Mulligan (who subtly tries to break Stephen's determination to be a free-willed artist, and also ultimately usurps his home).
