Haines is an Englishman from Oxford who is boarding in the tower with Stephen and Mulligan, apparently with the goal of researching Irish folk tradition. The previous evening he had a nightmare involving shooting a black panther; the dream disturbed Stephen, who feared Haines would try to shoot his gun while half-awake. This story parallels a story from Joyce's own life (see Ellmann's biography of Joyce for details).
