Mulligan, for all his willingness to do anything for gain, is one of the few people who recognize that Stephen is intelligent and not insane or useless. However, Stephen cannot reconcile himself with Mulligan's willingness to serve up Ireland to make a dollar, and Mulligan knows Stephen sees this side of him and is angered.
